The iPhone Actually Has No Competition Where It Matters Most

X-Men-First-Class-movie-image-James-McAvoy-Michael-FassbenderProfit. No point in burying the lede. For the past two years, it seems as if every other story in the mobile space has been about the war between the iPhone and Android. Hell, though it wasn't technically the theme of our Mobile First CrunchUp last week, that's all anyone wanted to talk about there as well. It's a sexy story because it features two companies, Apple and Google, that could not be any more different. And now they're the two companies dominating the mobile landscape. And the cherry on top is that they used to be close allies. They're Erik Lehnsherr and Charles Xavier.

Google Goes Soup-To-Nuts On Android With Bid For Motorola

Android MotorolaGoogle's surprise $12.5 billion bid for Motorola Mobility this morning is a bold attempt to move the needle for Google on several fronts. Google is going all in, dipping into its $39 billion of cash to make its biggest acquisition ever. The deal signals that mobile will be one of Google's main growth drivers and that growth will come from entering new markets, specifically mobile hardware. With the acquisition, Google gains a portfolio of 17,000 patents and another 7,000 patents pending globally, an area where it is a currently a laggard. But more than anything, it signals how crucial it is for Google to control the Android experience from soup to nuts. There may now be 150 million Android phones and they command the largest smartphone market share, but the most popular single smartphone by far is still the iPhone. Buying Motorola is an acknowledgement on Google's part that it must control the experience from software to hardware if it hopes to unseat Apple.

Glorious Minecraft-Themed Xperia Play For Sale On eBay

minecraft xperia playOne of the more pleasant surprises at E3 this year was our hands-on with the Xperia Play. I was really expecting to dislike the device, but after playing a few games on it, I found it to be totally legit, even if the games selection isn't so hot right now. And what's more, they had Minecraft on it. As one of the headline games of the new platform, it's no surprise that Minecraft is getting a little official love — today, it takes the form of a truly sweet looking Minecraft-themed Xperia Play.

Kickstarter Project Empowers Students, Plays The Mario Theme With Plasma

studentrndThis cool Kickstarter allows you to build a working speaker using plasma energy. It's a little esoteric, but here's the deal: this is a little kit that contains everything you need to play music using a plasma arc. If that doesn't seem like your idea of a good time, you might be reading the wrong post.

LinuxCon: All About Clouds

linuxcon-cloudsAlmost every single keynote at LinuxCon, and certainly every private conversation I had with folks here, involved "cloud" in some way. As Red Hat CEO Jim Whitehurst observed in his keynote, there's no single definition of "cloud". There's no doubt that Amazon has really pioneered the default cloud offering, but there's a lot of work going on to build better, more robust, and more open cloud solutions. Red Hat has OpenShift, their Platform as a Service offering, and CloudForms, their Infrastructure as a Service offering. The long-term vision, according to Whitehurst, is that a company's developers would begin building something on OpenShift, and not worry about any of the underlying infrastructure. When that product is ready to be deployed internally, it would go on the customer's CloudForms installation inside the company's firewall. Basically, developers will select the platform and operations can then own and manage that platform.

Galaxy S2 attach to TV through DLNA

With Galaxy S2, you could easily stream your music, videos and photos on your phone to any DLNA enabled devices like TV over WLAN. The AllShare service from Samsung allows you to stream all the full HD videos, music and pics across any devices that support AllShare services, such as PC, TV, mobile phone, and digital camera.

In this post, I?ll guide you how to share videos, music and pics from Samsung Galaxy S2 to TV though wifi network.

Since my LCD TV [Panasonic] doesn?t support DLNA, I used Sony Blu-ray player [Sony BD-370] to stream the data to TV from Galaxy phone. Follow the below steps to stream data from phone to TV via DLNA enabled bluray player.

Connect the Blu ray player to the same WLAN network to which your SGS2 is connected. That means if you?re using a wireless router, connect your galaxy s2 to it?s wifi network and attach the LAN cable from router to your DLNA compatible player like TV/Bluray.

Open the application Allshare in your SGS2 and you?ll see a connected symbol.
Now make sure the internet connection settings are ok in your TV. If it?s ok, you?ll see the I.P address assigned as shown in the image below.
Now start the AllShare application on your phone and check the connection server settings in TV.
Your Samsung Galaxy S2 will be shown under the server name along with the Mac address as shown in figure below.
Now you?ll be able to browse through the videos and photos on your phone from your TV. For accessing the videos from mobile on TV through DLNA, go to the videos tab and click on the mobile device which appears, in my case it was GT-I9100 which was indeed my device name.
Similarly, for browsing the photos on Galaxy S2 via wifi from TV, go to the photo tab and select the mobile device which appears.
Connecting Galaxy S2 to TV via DLNA is very easy and doesn?t require much effort. So try it and if you encounter any problem post them in the comment section below.

P.S: Other connectivity option for SGS2 is through MHL cable from Samsung, which can be connected to the HDMI input of the TV.
