Nokia unveils Symbian Belle, launches Nokia 600, 700 and 701 smartphones

Just minutes ago, Colin Giles, EVP of Nokia, took to the stage at a Nokia event in Hong Kong to unveil the company’s new line of Symbian powered smartphones; the Nokia 600, 700 and 701.

Nokia new devices all take on Nokia’s new naming strategy and will be powered by Nokia’s latest Symbian update, Symbian Belle. The new operating system update will provide new widgets, allow for deeper customisation and allow devices to utilise new apps built to utilise Nokia’s range of NFC-equipped smartphones.

Symbian Belle-powered Nokia smartphones will be now have six homescreens, sport an improved status bar that provides a pull down tab and�incorporates�missed calls, messages and settings. Navigating Symbian Belle devices will be easier, with the addition of a navigation and options bar.

Nokia has improved the way new Nokia devices utilise multitasking, and a new informative lockscreen.

Nokia 700

The Nokia 700, will launch with as “the most compact touch monoblock smartphone in the market right now”, measuring�just 110 x 50.7 x 9.7mm and weighing 96g.�It?s got a 1GHz processor, 3.2-inch AMOLED screen, boasts battery life of up to 7.3 hours talk-time or up to 465 hours on standby. The camera has a 5-megapixel full focus camera with an LED flash and comes with 2GB of user memory plus a MicroSD card slot for up to 32GB of extra storage. The device also has a NFC chip and can couple with Nokia’s new NFC-enabled accessories.

Nokia 701

The Nokia 701 is said to have the brightest screen in the world, shipping with a 3.5-inch IPS LCD display with ClearBlack technology. Again, the device is Symbian Belle powered and comes with�a 1GHz processor, a pentaband radio and has a brand new graphics co-processor. It’s small, with dimensions 11 x 56.8 x 117.3mm and weighs 131g.

The handset comes with a 8-megapixel full focus camera with a dual-LED flash on the back and one of the front for video calling. Inside there?s 8GB of internal memory an support for 32GB SD storage.

Nokia 600

The Nokia 600 launches as Nokia’s all-in-one media phone. It has a super load speaker, supports NFC (supporting Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja which is included on the device).

Similar to the 700 and the 701, the Nokia 600 has a 1GHz processor, a 3.2-inch nHD capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels�A-GPS is included, with an accelorometer and magnetometer.

Each device is expected to launch in the third quarter, with the Nokia 600 costing EUR 180, the Nokia 700 set at EUR 270 and the Nokia 701 priced at EUR 290.

Foursquare And Skype Coming To Playstation Vita

During a press conference at the Gamescom gaming conference in Cologne, Sony announced a few new features for their new handheld console, the Vita (watch our hands-on at E3 here). Among them were support for Foursquare and Skype. The references were made while talking about the 3G capabilities of the $300 model, but it wasn't implied that a 3G connection would be required. More powerful than most phones and sporting a large, bright touchscreen and dual cameras, the Vita should be able to handle these services perfectly well. There was no demonstration and no screenshots, though, so the UI is still a mystery. It's also unclear whether it will integrate with the Vita's other, more system-wide social tools.

The most amazing thing about Steve Jobs and the revival of Apple he engineered over the last 15 years is so improbable it is. Most of the digital innovations that have transformed our lives have been logical outgrowth of increasing power and decreasing cost of semiconductors. Someone was going to invent personal computers, cell phones, the Internet, even search engines. But there was nothing the slightest bit inevitable about a company whose digital products are perceived as so distinctive they attract dominant market shares despite premium prices. As recently as 2002, personal computers were seen as such a commodity business?dominated by high volume and low costs?that Hewlett Packard paid $25 billion to buy Compaq and vault past Dell to be the No. 1 in the market. Last week, HP, still the leader, said it is considering abandoning PCs altogether, at least partially a concession that Apple was taking an increasing share of the market and most of the profits. I haven?t been a Mac user since I sold my first generation model?with 128K of memory and one floppy drive. But I recently walked into an Apple store and fondled the latest MacBook Air. Big Brother 13 Recap! Who Is The New HOH? Who Is On The Block???

We start Sunday's episode with the HOH Competition already in progress. Thursday's show left us with quite a cliffhanger! The competition is called "Washed Up". You need to fill a tiny cup of liquid soap and transfer to it a big bowl. This should take a while. 

Jeff, Porsche and Rachel are leading throughout the competition. Adam falls hard on his ass. "Big Jeff" thinks he has to win this as Porsche will be coming after him and he voted out Rachel's fiance. Danielle is cheering on Kalia, but Kalia finds it annoying.

Jeff wins the HOH Competition after 1 hour and 30 minutes!

Danielle congratulates Jeff and tells him that if there is anything they can o to work together, she is game.

Kalia is not feeling safe with Jeff as the new HOH. Jeff did tell her several weeks ago that he would put her up if she put him up. She did, so I expect Jeff will return the favor.

Time To See Jeff's HOH Room! Jeff is the first guy to win HOH so far this season. We see some family photos from Jeff. Jordan says he is especially close with his nieces. He reads a letter from his brother and nieces.

On a side note, Jordan admitted that her boobs are fake on the Big Brother After Dark (or whatever they are calling it now). That took me by surprise. They seemed pretty natural to me.

Rachel awkwardly stays in the HOH Room with Jeff after everyone already left. The other house guests are down stairs saying that she does that to the new HOH every week. Shelly says she needs to go up there and and bitch out Rachel for all the dirty looks she has been giving her. She does go up and tells Rachel it's not her fault Brendon got evicted, even though she was on the block against him. Shelly wants a clean slate with Rachel so they can move forward with their alliance. Jeff was VERY proud of Rachel for biting her tongue and not lashing out at Shelly.

Jeff has to pick the Have Not's for the week. He picks Kalia, Porsche and Danielle. Besides slop, the 3 of them get to eat jalapenos and hard boiled eggs. I'd be stoked if I was a Have Not for the week and got jalapenos and hard boiled eggs! Love the spicy stuff!

Kalia, Rachel and Jeff are outside and Kalia asks Rachel if she would leave so she could talk to Jeff alone. Rachel leaves. Kalia asks Jeff if she is putting her up. He says that she is in the pot of people he is considering. Kalia starts throwing Rachel under the bus, saying she has been talking shit about him and Jordan behind their backs for the last couple of weeks. Jeff told her to expect repercussions from putting him up a few weeks ago.

Jeff and Danielle are chatting. Jeff tells her she is not getting put up this week. He wants to know what she would do if she the Veto. (She won a Veto ticket last week that allows her to play this week no matter what.) She said Kalia would expect her to take her off the block. Jeff wouldn't want her to change his nominations. Danielle said she can't win it then. Stupid move Danielle! You could ensure your safety against someone that will most likely back door you and you could save your biggest ally in the game! Evel Dick would disown you if you threw it!

Porsche starts chatting up Jeff. He was surprised because this is the first time in 49 days that Porsche has talked game with him. Porsche throws out the "won't put you up next week if you don't put me up this week" line. Talk doesn't really go anywhere.

Jordan and Jeff are talking about Jeff's earlier conversation with Danielle. They say they don't really trust that she would throw the Veto Competition this week. They don't know what to think.

It's Time For The Nomination Ceremony! Big Brother has switched out the table for a smaller one. It's kind of a mile stone in the game. They usually do that when there are 8 people left. The house guests were happy to have made it that far. Anyways, Jeff nominates Porsche and Kalia. He says it's nothing personal, just game play blah blah blah, the usual nomination speech.

The show ends with Jeff saying he plans to back door Danielle.

Kiss Me On The Bus: This App Crowdsources Bus Locations

A new app by Carnegie Mellon researchers Anthony Tomasic and John Zimmerman in conjunction with the University of Buffalo, allows bus riders to track their current location while riding the bus and, in turn, share this information with people who are still waiting, thereby creating a more complete map and schedule of bus routes and times. The app, Tiramisu, is free but, sadly, it only works in Pittsburgh right now.

We&Co: These Are The People In Your Neighborhood (Bar, Coffee Shop, Etc.)

Are you friends with your local barkeep, barista, or leather salesman? We&Co is a way to let them know you care. This iPhone app, launched on July 15, allows businesses to register their employees and then visitors can rate those employees (with an emphasis on positive criticism) and add them to your "favorite people" collection. Think of it as Yelp with considerably more granularity. I suppose the question then is "Why?" Why use an app when you can thank them yourself? Well, presumably, the aggregate score will encourage others to frequent the employee's place of business, thereby gaining them more tips and potential creepy stalkers. It also puts a name to the faces you see every day at your local eateries, drinkeries, and provisionaries.

OpenFeint And CrowdStar Incubator YouWeb Raises $2 Million

YouWeb, the social incubator behind OpenFeint, CrowdStar, Sibblingz and iSwifter, has raised another $2 million in funding from a number of angel investors including Dave Roux (the co-founder and chairman of Silver Lake Partners, Dave Whorton (the founder of Tugboat Ventures), Praful Shah, Brett Wander, Winston Cho and YouWeb founder Peter Relan. The company had previously raised $700,000 in funding. Relan explains that YouWeb differs from other programs in that it is an extremely early-stage, almost pre-Y Combinator incubator. He says that YouWeb simply chooses individuals based on talent, and entrepreneurs come in with no team, business model or idea. The individual is given $100,000, and develops a business or app in house. YouWeb usually incubates around two entrepreneurs per year.

Winning To Lose: HP?s Hardware Sales Were Strong But That?s Not Where The Money Is

If you look carefully at why HP bailed on consumer electronics and PCs, there are a few clear and simple reasons. The primary one? HP was number one in sales but - at least by Amplicate's arguably loose methodology - number seven in mindshare. In the end, it looks like it was better to let someone else flog the hardware while HP did what it always did best: tell businesses how to spend money in tech. So who is taking over for HP? Well, according to a Digitimes report, it looks like HP will be handing the keys to their brand over to Samsung, much as IBM did when it partnered with Lenovo to sell laptops and PCs.

Apple Destroys Q3 Earnings Estimates With Record Revenues, Profit, iPhone, And iPad Sales

Following Google's stellar earnings last week, Apple has today announced their own earnings for their Q3 period. As expected, they're good. Massively good. Apple set several new records in terms of both revenues and sales. Most notably, Apple's revenue was a staggering $28.57 billion ? over $5 billion ahead of their (always low) guidance, and almost $4 billion ahead of the $24.92 billion that Wall Street had been expecting. What's perhaps craziest about those numbers is that they're a new record for the company, and it comes in a non-holiday quarter (typically the best for consumer electronics companies). Apple's last holiday quarter earnings, Q1 2011, saw revenues of $26.7 billion.

Griffin Releases iPhone-Controlled Toy Helicopter

New Research Weaves Omnidirectional Antennas Into Clothing

Antennas are a bit like like underwear. Everybody needs them, but you generally want to conceal them, and when you have troubles with them, it gets embarrassing. Ever since we lost the pull-out and nub antennas of yesteryear on our phones and radios, the antenna has been more and more integrated with the designs of devices, but sometimes it isn't practical to do so. Take our clothing, for instance. Generally, getting antennas to play nice with bending and reshaping has led to poor performance (and then there are these things). But work being done at Ohio State University might have taken the next big step towards creating a sweater transmitter.
